[pianopianos article - "Yamaha Pianos"]
Yamaha pianos are recognised as the most popular piano brand Worldwide. With very impressive factories in Japan, UK and Indonesia, utilising advanced precision engineering, it is very apparent that the high quality product is consistent between models. Typically, pianos are very individual instruments, with 2 identical models having noticeable differences in their tonal characteristics. Primarily, this has been due to the lack of precision in manufacturing. Although there is some 'romance' in the traditional practice of 'crafting' pianos, simple facts are now ringing very true - such traditionally made pianos are inconsistent and cost far more to produce. The quality of design and build does not guarantee any consistency in the tone quality and, with a range of 88 notes, consistency is not to be overlooked on a piano.
The popularity of the Yamaha piano is well deserved. Despite the global association of the Yamaha brand with more popular products than pianos alone, having built pianos since 1899, Yamaha certainly do have piano design and build experience at least equal to most other big piano names. However, Yamaha pianos were mainly built for the Asian and American market, where the tonal characteristics are preferred to be quite clinical, percussive and less sonorous than that preferred in Europe. Export of products from Japan to Europe became a practice no sooner than the late 1970s, with Yamaha pianos appearing around 1980. Since then, Yamaha have made vast changes in the design of their pianos destined for Europe, yet maintaining the unmatched innovative production techniques. Over a 20year period, Yamaha pianos seen in Europe have progressively gained a tonal quality that does satisfy those seeking a deep, dynamic, colourful and lyrical tone with plenty of sustain. Compared with other piano manufacturers, Yamaha has far more to show for 20 years of piano price inflation.
